Friday, October 11, 2002 is a day I will never forget. This was the day my uncle called me and said do you want to go with me to see Brown Sugar. I was so excited because the trailer for the movie was really good. I had moved from New York City to Atlanta five years prior and excited because the movie is set in New York and talking about hip hop.
This movie was everything to me. Brown Sugar embodied the state of music today. The way I feel about Hip Hop Culture and truly spoke to me so much so eight years later I decided to name my business after it.
Its funny to me how several years later this movie stuck with me and transformed my life. Every day I would say to myself …to hip hop. I loved you, I still do…and I always will.
Hip Hop is my culture and this movie reminded me to look at what it is that I love so I can truly move forward with my life. It took me some time well eight years to be exact to say you know what I am going to go for it. I am going to really do what I need to do to get back to my love, Hip Hop.I came home and said to my husband, lets move back to NYC/NJ area. I thought for sure I need to be in NYC to really get in touch with Hip Hop. So we moved but something was not quite right. Four months later I said babe how would you feel about moving back to Atlanta. My husband being my husband said lets go. This time it was right. I had been released from a job I hated and I could focus on creating the brand I wanted full time. I wanted to infuse my Hip Hop Culture with my love for designing and printing Graphic T-shirts. Some how I felt like I missed the mark. I spent 2013 researching Hip Hop Culture as well as learning technics of printing.
Spring/Summer 2014 Brown Suga Chic line will have the voice I envisioned. We launch in a few weeks.
